TipESM at the TIPMIP General Assembly 2026 in Tokyo

TipESM was well represented at the TIPMIP General Assembly, held at the University of Tokyo, Japan, from 4–6 March. The assembly brought together researchers to discuss tipping likelihood, the impacts of tipping events, and tipping interactions – with many talks and dicussions on climate irreversibility in idealized overshoot scenario simulations.

A bunch of TipESM researchers attended the assembly, contributing with talks and posters, including:

  • Rashed Mahmood examined hysteresis of the global climate system in idealized warming and cooling simulations following TIPMIP protocols.
  • Marion Devilliers prese
  • nted EC-Earth3-ESM’s contribution to the TIPMIP-OCEAN experiment.
  • Chuncheng Guo explored the reversibility of Atlantic overturning circulation in the context of continued Greenland Ice Sheet melt.
  • Shuting Yang investigated the robustness of early warning indicators for tipping points.
  • Colin Jones shared first results from the TIPMIP ESM Tier 1 experiments.
  • Robin Smith presented on the causes and impacts of Ross Ice Shelf tipping in UK Earth System Model simulations.

The TIPMIP General Assembly was also a great opportunity to connect with our international collaborators from across Asia, Europe, and North America. Among others, we enjoyed the talks from Susanna Corti, Gokhan Danabasoglu and Tokuta Yokohata.

The assembly was a valuable opportunity to exchange findings across the international tipping points research community and strengthen international collaboration.
