We are proud to share that our TipESM Researchers: Shuting Yang, Thomas Frölicher, and Camilla Mathison are among the 193 experts appointed to participate in the author team of the upcoming IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) Working Group I on The Physical Science Basis of Climate Change!
The experts were nominated by governments and IPCC observer organisations and selected by the IPCC Bureau from a global pool of 3,771 nominees.
Shuting Yang (Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut) and Thomas Frölicher (University of Bern) will be working together among 18 experts on Chapter 8: “Abrupt changes, low-likelihood high impact events and critical thresholds, including tipping points, in the Earth system”, as Lead Author and Coordinating Lead Author, respectively.
Camilla Mathison (Met Office, University of Leeds) will work among 17 experts on Chapter 9: “Earth system responses under pathways towards temperature stabilization, including overshoot pathways” as Lead Author.
We would also like to congratulate TipESM Advisors: Gabi Hegerl, Ricarda Winkelmann, and Anna Pirani as well as TipESM Partners: Francois Engelbrecht, Roland Séférian, and Michio Kawamiya, who were also selected to work on IPCC AR7 in different capacities as Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors or Review Editors.
Our TipESM Project Coordinator, Shuting Yang, reflects on the appointment:
“Personally it’s a great honour to be included among a group of such distinguished researchers. IPCC is known for consolidating scientific knowledge and connecting researchers across the globe. It will be a wonderful experience to work on AR7 – contributing my expertise and learning from others too.”
The appointed experts will now begin working to assess relevant literature on the state of global climate, and will meet regularly over the next four years to coordinate this work. The report from Working Group I is expected around May 2028, and the Synthesis Report of the Seventh Assessment Report will be released by late 2029.
Congratulations to all the appointed experts. We look forward to keep up with this important work!
